When you find out that your relationship with your boss is not on the right track, ask yourself several questions in order to detect the problem.
First of all, rate your performance. Ask yourself if you reached the expected level you should be at. If you haven’t reached it yet, you should meet with your boss and try to find solutions for the problem. S/he would have to explain the reasons behind your weaknesses to the superiors; this fact would affect your relationship for sure.
Second of all, have you experienced with other different authorities parallel moments that are still engraved in your unconsciousness without you even being aware of? Take few minutes and throw a glance at your past. Maybe you were abused by your parents, teachers … or suffered from bullying in a period of time. These experiences might be the cause behind what you expect from your boss.
Third, sometimes you complain about your boss the same way you complain about any other authoritative figure or even previous bosses. Without being aware, a human usually compares different situations to each other, and thus builds a stereotype in his/her mind. This might be the case here.
Fourth, ask yourself this question: “am I dehumanizing my boss? Some employees are not able to see the boss as a human being like them. They do not know that s/he holds ambitions, fears, empathy… So, stop seeing your boss as a lion.
Fifth, have you tried to make some effort in order to solve the problem and fix your relationship with your boss? If not, what are you waiting for? Do you find yourself unable to fix things out, and that your case is helpless? Do you feel that he only deals with you and only you in such manner? Walk in his/her shoes i.e. try your best to find out the source of the problem.
Sometimes you might be the problem, and sometimes the boss. Some bosses use their posts in order to impose their authority on others. They experience joy in doing so. Now, it is up to you whether you choose to endure this authoritative relationship or leave your job. In both cases, show your intelligence.
