Managers may be mistaken to think that scared employees work harder. So sometimes they tend to scare their team in order to become more productivity.
This might work on the short term. However…
Following are the signs and consequences of such a strategy:
Your working place become like a classroom. You prefer the top-down replica; in other terms, you expect that no one you supervise disagrees with you. You are the authoritative teacher, they’re the mischievous pupils. You supervise them, analyze them and reproach them in front of the class. And even sometimes you send them to your office and close the door violently. Your emails and memos end with a threat. You only see errors and only talk when it comes to fixing them. What comes next? Another form of disgrace?
The outcome: employees try their best to follow the rules instead of succeeding in their jobs. They feel secured when you are happy with their work. Inventiveness and novelty vanish.
You strongly believe that employees only work to get paid. And your concept of a worker is someone who wants a great salary for low efforts. This doesn’t apply on the majority of your employees. It’s true that an employee needs a decent salary, but they also need to feel motivated and useful and contribute in accomplishing the goals of the company. This is called decency.
The outcome: Quitting is exceptionally high. Nothing will stop an employee from resigning despite the big salary.
You accumulate data. Your company’s financial state is their last concern, but on the other hand they care less about the pending job applicants through any media medium either. Include them in matters that they care about. In another way you will seem isolated and mischievous.
The outcome: The insufficient information creates rumors which fill the gaps. Employees lose trust in your company and feel disconnected.
You think that the other employees learn from those who left. Execution in public informs the citizens that the sheriff is strict and firm. When employees see their co-workers go out the door with their stuff in a box, that’ll awaken them.
The outcome: At this point, the place has become crippled because of you. Employees abuse their sick and vacation days allowed by the company. Going to work becomes not only disagreeable but also dangerous.
