As a manager, you might face a lot of issues when hiring new employees. Sometimes, you hire a very qualified candidate, with a great resume and experience; however, after few days of work, you realize that he/she is not giving the required results.
You were expecting to see higher performance, more enthusiasm at work and higher productivity. In this case, you will have to either adopt a recovering plan or just end everything as soon as possible.
In case you decide to keep this employee because you can see signs of improvement, you can follow many steps and do several things to ensure that you’re doing the right thing:
- Re-analyze the interview results and on what you based your expectations. If you think you were very optimistic about his/her performance but the results were different, you must re-think about it.
- Managers sometimes get confused about whether it is the employee’s performance or his/her way of accomplishing tasks. The fact that the style of work is giving you hard times to be OK with it, then you should hold a one-to-one meeting and explain the work style of the company. Things could be solved this way.
- The problem might be that the new employee is not aware of the company’s policies at work. Investing trainings can really help.
- When you hire a new employee, assign a mentor to monitor the flow of work. Giving the new hire-up the chance to be given advice on the work style can solve the issue.
- Honesty plays an important role in this case. You can clarify your expectations to the new hire-up. Tell him/her about the quality and quantity of work required. Do not forget to mention the conduct policy.
- New hire-ups cannot be trusted as your old employees. You should hold regular meetings to explain all the details regarding projects, due dates.
- You can consider moving the position of the new employee if you think he/she has potentials but not in the current post. Find him/her another job where they can show better results.
Finally, after realizing that many new employees are being hired wrongly, it should be discussed with the HR. Knowing the source of the mistake will help you avoid making the same thing all over again. Make sure you are aware of all the contracts being made with the employee and whether they have strong relationships with employees you don’t want to lose. After all, any step or decision should be discussed with the HR department.
