You need to take precautions when you want to start a new business.
1. Highlight the target
Normally, in a new business, you start by targeting the customers then generalizing. However, in a startup, it’s best if you start by targeting the ideal customer and stop before taking a step towards generalizing.
Through the marketing activities you will know the people and the business better and what is more suitable. Don’t play the role of a fiction writer who is imagining his characters, their likes and dislikes. Create your customer an identity including age, gender, economic level, media preferences, buying preferences, even the clothes they wear and the car they drive. Imagine what their political views may be. Start by what you know and end with what you have imagined.
If this seems impossible or hard for you to do, then you either need a partner or review your startup.
2. Identity and business offering are the essence
Targets should not set in a rush. Stay aware of your identity and what your business offers:
- Creating identity makes you and your business unique. It’s like a puzzle where each piece represents a factor including: strengths, 2weaknesses, core competencies, resources, your concept of success and so forth.
- What your business offers is your products, services, subscription, app and anything else that you sell.
You can’t decide what you are willing to reach unless you have an identity and offering. Target, identity and offering must come together to succeed. If, for example, you’re a fine-shoes maker who likes genuine leather shoes only, then you probably don’t need people with low budgets who are looking for cheap shoes, as you target your market.
3. Blend, agitate, and cook
When you are in a startup business your ideas are constantly evolving to fit the market and the business offering. The market, the product and your own company will always teach you something new to grow.
Always make sure your strategy is not out of date. You should always keep it under trial with tactics and achievement. The market you have chosen will always provide you with feedback, which teaches you a lot and helps you improve
