Who among us doesn’t lie from time to time? We all say we don’t, but we all know it is not true. According to researches done in the United States, the average of lies is 2 per day for every person. However, it differs from one person to another.
If we look at it closer, we find out that we deal with liars every day; sometimes we know it and sometimes we don’t! As a manager, you will suspect that some of your employees are kind of lying or hiding something. Do you know how to deal with such type of employees?
There is no doubt that you get someone lying to you throughout your day, especially at work. Therefore, you must be wise enough to spot the liar and the type of his/her lies. In fact, there are 2 different types of liars at work: those who lie frequently and those who lie from one time to another.
People, who are frequent liars, do not feel guilty about saying something not true or lying about something. They usually tend to come up with creative lies and show there lying skills, finding it hard to tell something very true.
As a manager, you need to worry less about the whether these people are telling the truth or not, try to focus on the important things they are lying about, such as deadlines, quality… Actually, frequent liars saying they will make the deadlines as agreed are just like non-punctual people who say they will be there on time. All you have to do is figure out their “lying” methods, and find ways to adjust everything accordingly.
On the other hand, infrequent liars tend to lie due to fear or insecurity. They may be using this option to reflect a better image for themselves. For example, they might act as if they know something very well, when they have no idea about it. These kind of liars must be given the feeling of being accepted.
We definitely get mad and angry when we find out that someone is lying to us. However, we must know that there are different types of liars, different methods of lying and different intentions. Therefore, we should be aware of our reactions towards the liars and their lies. Do not be too emotional and do not take it personal. You can simply show the liar, in a very polite way. That you are not buying the lie. In addition, you can choose to pretend believing the lie, and try deceiving the liars back.
Just be careful!
