The diet starts on January 1st. Are you making big and courageous resolutions to “eat right”? Do not panic about the idea and resolve to think small so you can reach any diet goal. Start with these simple tips…
New Year’s Diet Resolution No. 1: Go Slow
Focus on getting more fiber, more fish and more fresh fruit in your diet this year. If you take slow and small steps, any diet change becomes easier. For instance, you can add a piece of produce to your lunch daily. You can also designate a day as fish day and put a single serving of your favorite whole-grain cereal, and then treat it as your midmorning snack.
New Year’s Diet Resolution No 2: Water, Water, and Water
Water is mandatory for your body. It is cheap, fat-free, and gives you a quenching lift. If you see that drinking eight cups a day is difficult, try to drink one glass first thing in the morning, before you brush your teeth. You can also drink water with a splash of your favorite beverage (e.g. soda) in it first. Finally, take a decision to drink one more cup of water today than you had yesterday.
New Year’s Diet Resolution No. 3: Go for the Gold … and Red … and Purple
Colorful produce contains disease-fighting plant compounds. So when you go shopping, reach for a rainbow. Moreover, you can designate a color-a-day. For example, Mondays can be yellow, with grapefruit, golden apples, or corn starring in meals, while Tuesdays can be purple with plum and eggplant. In addition, get the kids involved and go for a theme. For instance, build a green pizza with emerald bell peppers and artichokes, or a red produce-infused chili. Furthermore, try to vary the rainbow by picking up a new-to-you fruit or veggie the next time you shop.
New Year’s Diet Resolution No 4: Tackle Mindless Eating
Chatting with friends around the dinner table or watching a DVD can get you eating all the time without paying attention. What you can do to stop nibbling is to pop a stick of gum or a sugar-free mint in your mouth, to brush or floss your teeth, to pay attention and look at each piece of food you plan to eat and to busy your hands with a glass of water, a cup of tea, or cleaning off the table.
New Year’s Diet Resolution No 5: Ask for help when you need it
Do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You can share your diet and weight resolutions with a friend or family member. You can also tell them about your ideas and your plans. Get away from the temptations like ice cream, chips and soda while you are shopping at the grocery store. Socialize with non-food events. Get your friends together for a hike for example.
New Year’s Diet Resolution No 6: Baby Your Body
Do the little things that keep your body thriving like get moving 30 minutes a day most days. Go for a walk, and try not to use your car. Get those tests you know you need like cholesterol checks, glucose checks and others …. Do not forget to have a good sleep because it will help the body and the soul recharge, stay healthy, and cope with stress.
