Let’s say you are a super organized employee: You create a to-do-list every day and plan all your tasks attentively; you follow the rules and accomplish all the tasks on time. However, the only issue you have is that your boss ruins it all; he runs to you with several urgent requests that you are required to respond to, no matter how important the projects you are working on are.
How do you think you must behave? Respond to his orders? Ignore his requests? You might think that the most suitable thing to do is not to spoil him by doing what you’re told; however, he might dislike this. He might also give you a bad review. You get really confused and you don’t know how to deal with his behaviors and orders. Here’s a pretty good solution:
You should understand at first that you are working for your boss and you should be a little bit flexible. Even though you have full right not to accept his orders immediately, yet you can’t tell him this directly because it will be considered as an inappropriate behavior; regardless of how logical your reasons are. After all, it’s only a difference in work style and should be handled in a different way.
It is normal to find different characters and personalities at work. In fact, some people like to be organized and aware of all the upcoming plans and due tasks, while others continuously find new things to do and find out new ideas to accomplish every single hour. If both characters were asked to be in one place/office, someone’s going to commit a crime.
In that case, you must be wise in deciding what to do. Do not forget that your job is in your boss’s hand and you don’t have the choice to drive him crazy. After all, he is the person who gives you performance reviews and you can get very bad reviews if you don’t obey. Therefore, with no plenty of choices ahead of you, you must play it smart: do your plans and organize your work and tasks as usual, but don’t forget to include extra time for urgent tasks of your boss. Just be prepared for the last-minute tasks and don’t ruin your job by saying NO to your boss.
