Being perfectionist is undoubtedly a quality that executives venerate notwithstanding the fact that some actions and missions cannot be perfectly accomplished; however employees do their utmost to achieve their goals against all odds. Farsighted and lucid managers know that extreme perfectionism can have a negative impact on their groups.
The perfectionist employee
Why does perfectionism destroy the good elements of the enterprise? First of all, when for example a perfectionist employee has to write a memo or a report, he will only start writing the second part, which is the most important, better yet crucial part for the enterprise, when the introduction is perfect. This shows a bad management of priorities in the enterprise and besets the productivity since time is wasted on the finalization of details that can lead to no fructuous results at the expense of the essential parts.
However, it is better to finish the assigned task and to respect the time allocated to it. Therefore, it is important to start first with the essential parts instead of filling your head with details, which leads to more stress.
The perfectionist managers
As for perfectionist managers, they must learn to entrust their collaborators, who they trust and are sure of their capacities, with certain tasks. First, they can entrust them with simple missions, less crucial or strategic, and should accept their own methods even if they were different from theirs.
Finally, being meticulous and precise is absolutely great. However, when sending e-mails, memos, or reports, it is not necessary to write an “essay”, especially when colleagues are very busy the whole day and don’t have the time to greet others.
Even if you are worried about precision, you should avoid endless memos and emails full of attachments et focus on the key information that will facilitate the task for everyone.
